Cultural collaboration in La Ronge long-term care design
In La Ronge, a partnership between Elders, Knowledge Keepers, the community and the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) is ensuring the design of a new long-term care (LTC) home is rooted in cultural understanding.
In the second episode of the Advancing SHA’s Commitment to Truth and Reconciliation series, Kellie Stroeder, Director of Continuing Care – Northeast, SHA, was joined by Elder Frances Charles to share a story about the La Ronge long-term care (LTC) project.
The project began in 2016 with sessions involving all stakeholders, resulting in a shared vision focused on cultural awareness and safety, while honouring past, present and future residents.
“We deeply value collaboration with the local folks in La Ronge,” said Kellie.
The new LTC home will significantly increase capacity and include culturally meaningful spaces. “It makes me proud,” said Elder Frances Charles. “The Elders that have had no place to go will now have one.”
Once the new LTC home opens, the project’s renovation phase will establish vital health-care services, including a satellite dialysis unit on site in the former long-term care space.
This collaboration shows the SHA’s CARES values of compassion, accountability, respect, equity and safety.
The Government of Saskatchewan announced in February 2025 that construction had reached 50 per cent completion.
