What is a Medical Radiation Technologist?
A Medical Radiation Technologist (MRT) is a health-care professional that provides a variety of medical diagnostic imaging services that assist in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. The four specialty areas that make up the MRT profession include:
- Magnetic resonance imaging - Production of diagnostic images using equipment that generates radio waves and strong magnetic field in order to monitor and take care of patients.
- Nuclear medicine technology - Use of radiopharmaceuticals and radiation physics to perform diagnostic imaging procedures with sophisticated technology.
- Radiation therapy - Planning and administration of radiation treatment using complex medical radiation equipment for cancer patients. Learn more on the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency website.
- Radiological technology - Production of images of body parts and systems by performing and assisting in exams in general x-ray, Computed Tomography (CT) scan, breast imaging, operating room and other specialized procedures.
MRT's work in emergency departments, operating rooms, imaging departments and medical clinics.
What is it like working as a Medical Radiation Technologist at the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA)?
Medical Radiation Technologists (MRT) work in hospital and clinical settings throughout the province with the SHA as part of a multidisciplinary health-care team in order to provide the best patient care. MRTs work in shifts in order to provide health-care coverage based on the needs of the facility or clinic and this may include days, nights, and weekends. Opportunities to grow as a MRT include taking advanced courses to work in specialized areas, and pursuing management and leadership positions.

What can I earn as a Medical Radiation Technologist?
The current pay per hour is:
- Medical Radiation Technologist - $38.07 - $40.77
- Medical Radiation Technologist Specialty - $40.61 - $43.51
- Medical Radiation Technologist Supervisor - $45.07 - $48.29
