Creating culturally-safe care for all patients of Saskatchewan
Jennifer Ahenakew, the first Vice President of First Nations and Métis Health for the Saskatchewan Health Authority views her role as a significant milestone in the SHA’s journey towards reconciliation.
“We’re on the path in the right direction in creating culturally-safe places and culturally-safe care for all patients of Saskatchewan,” Ahenakew said, acknowledging the systemic barriers Indigenous people face in accessing health care, and the need for high-quality care.
Recognizing the importance of reconciliation, equity and respecting Indigenous knowledge, culture and elders’ advice is an example of living the SHA Values: Compassion, Accountability, Respect, Equity and Safety (CARES). Ahenakew says she believes there is a deep commitment within the organization.
