Specimen Information
Specimen types accepted
- Whole Blood for Sickle cell screen and plasma for reflex testing (Iron and Ferritin)
Specimen collection container
- Preferred collection containers: Lavender (EDTA) 4.0 mL and Light Green (Lithium Heparin Gel) 4.5 mL
Required volume
- Optimal volume: Full collection tube
- Minimum/pediatric volume: 1.0 mL whole blood
(Submitting the minimum volume makes it impossible to repeat the test or perform confirmatory/reflex testing. In some situations, a minimum volume may require a second collection.)
Transport and stability
- 5 days at 2-8ºC

- Specimens received where the proper collection protocols were not followed
