Medical Renal Biopsy - Saskatoon

RUH (for adult biopsies)

• Renal biopsies must be booked in advance to ensure technologists are available to process the specimen. Call 306-655-8569. You will need patient's name, date and time of collection and hospital where the specimen will be procured.
• If biopsy is cancelled, please call 306-655-8569
• Label container with patient's first and last name, personal health number (PHN)
• The removed biopsy should be placed on saline soaked gauze (or Telfa™ pads soaked with Normal Saline) in leak-proof labelled specimen container. Fold the gauze or Telfa™ pad over the biopsy pieces to avoid drying of the specimen. Please avoid filling the container with liquid of any sort (saline, RPMI, etc.); this causes the biopsy pieces floating inside the container and may subsequently lead to loss of tissue and considerable processing artifacts.
• Place specimen container in a plastic bag containing crushed ice
• Complete a Surgical Pathology Requisition Form #4030 with the patient's addressograph, site of biopsy, all relevant clinical history and physician's signature

• Baseline biopsies sent in formalin stay at the originating site and are sent to the Histology laboratory 

• Phone laboratory porter 306-221-6376 to request STAT delivery to RUH Histology laboratory room #2854
• Call RUH Histology laboratory (2155) to inform them that a fresh renal biopsy is enroute
• Phone 306-655-8569 to inform Histology technologist that biopsy is enroute

• Phone T Force Final Mile courier (previously Dynamex) at 306-975-1010 to request STAT delivery to SCH Histology laboratory room #5522
• Phone 306-655-8569 to inform Histology technologist that biopsy is enroute

• Deliver to Specimen Management laboratory – B wing – level 1 and indicate STAT renal biopsy be sent to SCH Histology laboratory room #5522
• Phone 306-655-8569 to inform Histology technologist that biopsy is enroute
