Recreation therapy improves quality of life for residents
The job of a recreation therapist, grounded in evidence-based practices and clinical expertise, is serious science at play.
“We use recreation and leisure to achieve specific health goals,” explained Senior Recreation Therapist, Camille Lesiuk, who along with, Recreation Therapist, Erika Vallee, has organized a series of therapeutic programs for residents of The Meadows long-term care home in Swift Current, the Shaunavon Care Center and the Southwest Integrated Healthcare Facility in Maple Creek.
The programs range from drumming, bowling, boxing and equestrian therapy to creative writing, listening to music, and expressive arts.
Everything they do fits into the SHA’s CARES values of compassion, accountability, respect, equity and safety.
This video contains more insight into their work and why they do what they do.
Recreation Therapy programs in the past year at The Meadows in Swift Current, Shaunavon Care Center and Maple Creek Southwest Integrated Facility have included music therapy, swimming, art therapy, virtual reality, equestrian therapy and even creative writing, among many others.
