National Indigenous History Month: Let’s learn together
National Indigenous History Month (NIHM) is commemorated across Canada in June to honour the history, heritage, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples. Established in 2009, NIHM reflects the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s call for public education and awareness.
National Indigenous Peoples Day is observed on June 21. This date is significant since it also observes the Summer Solstice, an event that carries deep cultural importance for many Indigenous Peoples. It is often celebrated with ceremonies and gatherings.
There are numerous ways take in the many Indigenous public ceremonies, educational opportunities, celebrations, authentic culinary experiences and other experiences across the province this month.
