Integrating Mental Health and Addictions Services through Accreditation
The Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) has adopted a new Mental Health and Addictions standard.
First used in Integrated Saskatoon Health in 2024, this new standard replaces the previous best practices that covered mental health services, community-based mental health services, substance abuse, and problem gambling.
Recognizing that there is a high correlation between mental illness and substance abuse issues, the new standard promotes the integration of mental health and substance use care, incorporating trauma-informed care and recovery-oriented practices. It also emphasizes client-centered care, access to peer support services, and the role of designated support persons chosen by clients. As well, it focuses on delivering high-quality, safe care tailored to the client’s goals, preferences, and abilities, with coordination across health and social service teams.
This initiative reflects the SHA’s commitment to delivering compassionate, respectful and safe care, upholding the SHA’s CARES values — compassion, accountability, respect, equity and safety. It ensures timely, equitable, and culturally appropriate access to services, aligning with Saskatchewan’s Action Plan for Mental Health and Addictions Services.
