Indigenous Birth Support Workers guide families with culture and care
When First Nations, Métis and Inuit families welcome a new baby at the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital, they may be able to take part in practices of their culture such as a smudge, moss bag or a belly button pouch.
Since 2019, Indigenous Birth Support Workers have been supporting families at the Saskatoon hospital. As you will hear in this video, their work also includes heartfelt advocacy, education and supporting a positive hospital experience.
Every part of their work embodies the SHA’s CARES values of compassion, accountability, respect, equity and safety. The support from Indigenous Birth Support Workers is a testament to culturally safe and trauma-informed care, making sure every patient feels seen, supported and respected.
